The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) is mainly responsible for research and development, intellectual property protection, and international cooperation, promotion, and coordination in renewable energy sources such as wind power, small hydro, biogas, and solar power.

MNRE is implementing 3 biogas related programmes:

i) Biogas power generation (Off - Grid) and Thermal energy application programme (BPGTP) for promoting biogas generation for Off-grid/ distributed and decentralized Renewable Power applications in the capacity range of 3 kW to 250 kW and also for thermal energy applications having biogas generation capacity in the corresponding matching size range of 30 m3 to 2500 m3 per day.

ii) New National Biogas and Organic Manure Programme (NNBOMP). It is a central sector scheme aims for setting up small Biogas Plants in the size range varying from 1 m3 to 25 m3. The objectives of the scheme are to provide green and clean renewable gaseous fuel for cooking, lighting and small power needs of the potential farmers, cattle farmers/ users including individual households and to facilitate management and utilization of biogas plant produced slurry as an organic enriched Solid Biogas Fertilizer (SBF) / Biogas Liquid Fertilizer (BLF). The NNBOMP scheme, a central sector scheme aims for setting up small Biogas Plants in the size range varying from 1 m3 to 25 m3. iii) Waste to Energy-The Programme on Energy from Urban, Industrial and Agricultural Waste/Residues aimed at generation of biogas, BioCNG and Power from different wastes, such as vegetable and other market wastes, slaughterhouse waste, agricultural residues and industrial wastes & effluents
